Visa monitoring
VAMP ratio calculator
This calculator works out a store’s VAMP ratio the way Visa does, from one month of card payments, chargebacks and fraud reports, and shows how close that month sits to Visa’s limits. It runs only on the numbers entered here. Nothing is read from any store.
One month of numbers
Card payments captured in the month. Visa counts Visa cards only, so that figure on its own is the exact one; the total across all cards is a close approximation.
Every chargeback that arrived in the month, whatever the reason. Fraud chargebacks count here too.
Payments a cardholder’s bank reported as fraud during the month. Payment providers often call these early fraud warnings. A payment that was reported as fraud and later charged back is counted in both boxes.
0.34%
Chargebacks plus fraud reports, divided by card payments.
17
Chargebacks plus fraud reports. Visa checks this number as well as the ratio.
This month is under both of Visa’s lines.
Visa’s limits
Visa puts a store into the program when a month is at or over 1.5% with 1,500 or more chargebacks and fraud reports. The same rule applies in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. Above these lines Visa can charge monthly fines, and a store that stays there can lose the ability to take Visa cards.

Three examples
| Card payments | Chargebacks | Fraud reports | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12,000 | 21 | 9 | 0.25% |
| 4,000 | 26 | 12 | 0.95% |
| 900 | 9 | 6 | 1.67% |
- 0.25%
- This month is under both of Visa’s lines.
- 0.95%
- This month is over 0.5%, Visa’s lower line, and under the 1.5% that puts a store into the monitoring program. The lower line is aimed mainly at a payment provider’s whole book of stores, but Visa can charge fees above it, so providers watch for stores at this level.
- 1.67%
- This month is at or over 1.5%, the line where Visa puts a store into its monitoring program once the monthly count is 1,500 or more. The count matters as much as the ratio at this level.
How Visa works it out
Visa adds a month’s chargebacks and fraud reports and divides by the card payments captured in the same month. A payment that was reported as fraud and then charged back counts twice.
Refunds and won disputes take nothing off the count; Visa measures what came in, not how it ended.
The official figures sit with the payment provider. A month that lands near a line is worth checking against the ratio Visa reports for the account.
